This beautiful, one of a kind statement ring is a collaboration between jewelry maker Sarah Sonder and myself. When I decided I wanted to experiment with more high end trashy jewelry pieces, I knew that I wanted to work with Sarah. She already knew about my deep love for the ocean and for morning walks in woods scattered with fungi and lichen. When I asked her to incorporate these elements into pieces that I could then fill with trash, she produced exactly what I wanted.

This one of a kind ring is handmade with recycled sterling silver. The "stone" is made by binding found or discarded plastics in a bio resin, forming a white and blue "stone" and the focal part of the ring is 1/2" x 1". This ring has a horizontal rather than vertical design.

In many cases, there is no current method of recycling the plastics I use via traditional means. In addition, a recent study published by Greenpeace shows that while we have recently been speaking about how the plastic recycling rate is around only 9%, it's actually closer to 5%. Many items that are thrown in the recycling bin never actually get recycled, which is one of many reasons I incorporate found plastics into my jewelry items.

  • These are considered costume jewelry and should be kept in dry areas when not being worn (so don't keep them in the bathroom or kitchen, don't go swimming in them, don't wear them while dancing in the rain, etc.). Spraying chemicals on or near costume jewelry may speed up the "antiquing" of metal - for instance, perfumes, hair spray, make-up setting sprays.

A portion of our proceeds are donated to environmental conservation efforts. We donate a minimum of $1,000 per year to Ocean Conservancy as part of their Business Champions for Sea Change Program. We also donate $1 to Mangrove Action Project for each package we ship. The sale of these pieces also helps to fund the direct clean-up of thousands of pieces and pounds of plastic trash, as well as helping to fund environmental education efforts.

Please see our page on sustainability for information on how you can return your old or worn out Hey Lola jewelry to us for recycling.
