One of my favorite materials is beat up, trashed, colorful ball pit balls ( aka "dirty balls"). They're definitely throw away plastics, as they generally can't be recycled, and it's hard to find another use for them after their original purpose is no longer an option. But I use these old toys to make my hoop earring beads, and I use whatever is leftover from that to make the pigment for my trash stud earrings - like these! Don't worry, all plastics are cleaned and sanitized before use.

These are considered costume jewelry and should be kept in dry areas when not being worn (so don't keep them in the bathroom or kitchen, don't go swimming in them, don't wear them while dancing in the rain, etc.). Spraying chemicals on or near costume jewelry may speed up the "antiquing" of metal - for instance, perfumes, hair spray, make-up setting sprays.
When not worn, pieces should be stored in a dark, cool place, away from light and air exposure. Hair spray, perfume, etc should be applied and allowed to dry before putting on jewelry. These are not out of the ordinary storage solutions, but rather, best practices for all jewelry pieces.
