One time a woman left a note in the comment section of an article about me: "ugh. She thinks she's so great." And it struck me that it was a very odd thing that we can tell each other that we're great, but we're oftentimes not allowed to think that we as individuals are great. "she thinks she's so great" is an obvious insult.
Unless you don't allow it to be.
You are so great.
The elephant series was painted during a period of loneliness, depression, vulnerability and isolation. I became obsessed with how elephants live in communities that take care of each other, and how, if I had to go about life in public, that I wished I could do it while wearing a mask. So that I could do what had to be done, but no one would ever have to see me. These paintings were instrumental in my healing process and eventual recovery.
